 Term 2 Issue 2 |

Kia ora e te whānau o Whangaparāoa
Term 2 is in full swing, with sports, clubs, events, and NCEA assessments keeping everyone busy. This week, many learners sat their first NCEA exams in the Common Assessment Activities (CAAs). After the numeracy exam, I spoke to proud and relieved learners—whether confident or uncertain, they all gave their best effort. These moments remind us how resilience grows through challenges, and our role as a community is to support their confidence and determination.
Winter sports are off to a strong start. As both a parent and teacher, I love cheering from the sidelines, whether on the field, beach, pool, or court. It’s a privilege to support our kids in their co-curricular pursuits. You may have seen our media posts highlighting our talented musicians, world-class swimmers, environmental leaders, and first-time orienteering athletes—each gaining valuable life lessons through competition and teamwork.
Unfortunately, some lessons are tough ones. Last week, I had to reprimand a few learners for misconduct. To their credit, they acknowledged their actions, understood the impact on their team and community, and accepted the consequences with humility. I can reassure you we take these matters seriously—any player or supporter who breaches Āhuatanga Whangaparāoa, our values, or Code of Conduct will face at least a stand-down from future games. I also reassured another school involved that Whangaparāoa is a proud community and we expect the highest level of fairplay and manaaki from all our players and supporters.Thank you to everyone who fosters sportsmanship in our rangatahi. Your support helps them grow through challenges while making the most of co-curricular opportunities.

Year 9 / 10 Sports CampTwo weeks ago, 33 of our Year 9 and 10 students absolutely rocked it at the Totara Springs Sports Camp! They dove into a huge variety of sports and activities, making us incredibly proud with how they represented Whangaparāoa College. Their enthusiasm for trying new things and connecting with others truly embodied our Āhuatanga values. We're thrilled to announce we clinched an impressive 6th place overall! Our students brought home some fantastic results, including:
1st Place: Boys Tag, Girls Tag, Boys Touch, Long Ball, Hole in One Golf, Mini Golf
2nd Place: Bowls, Draughts, Rock Climbing, Scramball, Shooting
With amazing weather, exciting new sports, and the start of new friendships, it was an unforgettable experience for everyone. A massive shout-out to Mr. Maxwell and Year 11 learner Ariana for their invaluable support – we couldn't have done it without them!

School Ball HelpThe Whangaparāoa College Ball Committee is thrilled to announce this year's ball theme:
A Night in Narnia!
We're busy planning a truly magical winter wonderland, and we'd love the community's help to bring it to life.
To help us transform the venue, we're kindly asking for donations or temporary loans of winter coats and Christmas trees. All items will be clearly labelled to ensure their safe return to their owners. If you're able to contribute, please drop off your items to the main reception between June 1st and June 13th. We'll make sure everything is returned securely after the long weekend.
Thank you in advance for your support in making this a night to remember! | | |
