Term 1 Issue 3

Kia ora e te whānau o Whangaparāoa

It gives me great pleasure to announce our Prefect Executive team for 2026. Our Prefect selection process has been the most rigorous in our school's history, starting back in Term 3 last year with a number of open leadership training evenings for those interested in school leadership. In term 4, there were learner and staff voting, and each candidate was then interviewed by senior staff. At the conclusion of the year, we announced the 25 Prefects for the 2026 school year. Over the last few months, the Prefect team has been scrutinised at every step, and the team itself has had the opportunity to vote for a new leader.

So, the Prefect Executive Team for 2026 is:
Head Learners: Ella Garlick and Dylan Blanchard
Deputy Head Learners:
Nariah Tikinau and Charlie Teviotdale
Learner Council Chair:
Liberty McKee

Our staff are busy completing the first formal report of the school. This is intended to give an initial snapshot and indication of each learner's start to the school year. The further discussion from the reports comes in a few weeks' time when you have the opportunity to discuss this report with your learners Kaiārahi. Later in the year, you will have the opportunity to meet the individual subject teachers and get a fuller understanding of the academic progress made to that point in time. I strongly encourage you to attend these evenings and continue the partnerships we know work so well to improve learning outcomes for all. Please check your emails carefully later this week for the booking instructions.

There is a huge amount of activity involving learners inside and outside the classroom at our school currently. Walking through the grounds before, during, and after school is a sheer delight.  Be it extra tutoring and support outside the normal class time, rehearsals and practises for Polyfest and our school show, or sports trials and practises, it is all on. Please encourage your learner to make the most of these opportunities and continue to engage fully in school.

I want to wish our Pasifika group, combined with Ōrewa College, the best of luck as they participate at Polyfest next week. Polyfest is one of the largest celebrations of Pasifika culture and we know how hard you have all worked in the build-up to this event. We know you will do yourselves, your families and our community incredibly proud.

Wānanga Camp

We couldn’t have asked for better weather for our Senior Wānanga Camp at Te Haruhi Bay Campground at the end of February!

The heart of this trip is Whanaungatanga, bonding our group of learners across year levels (11-13). Through grouped tasks, challenges and good kai, we’ve noticed a huge shift in relationships and connections.
These connections are a pillar to our learner achievement every year.

Te Whare Hauora

At Whangaparāoa College, we know that a learner who is well is a learner who can excel. Wellbeing isn't just a nice-to-have, it is the foundation for focus, memory, and motivation in the classroom.

To support our whānau as we head into the second half of Term 1, we are launching The Weekly 1% Shift. Each week, we’ll share one small, science-backed tip to help our learners regulate their energy and sharpen their minds. Keeping it simple helps us achieve a 1% improvement to help us finish the term strong.

The Weekly 1% Shift
The Mid-Term Reset

By mid-term, routines can start to slide. Spend five minutes on Sunday night with your learner looking at the week ahead. Check that uniforms are ready, bags are packed, and any major deadlines are noted.

This will reduce "decision fatigue" on Monday morning, lowering anxiety and setting a calm tone for the week.

We are proud to celebrate two members of Whangaparāoa College who have recently achieved exciting sporting honours.

Noah Elmiger - Year 11

Noah Elmiger has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Canoe Racing Asia Pacific Cup in the U16 Men’s division. This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to Noah’s hard work and dedication. We wish Noah all the very best and look forward to hearing how the competition goes in May.

Michelle Walker - Staff member
We also want to recognise Michelle Walker. Michelle has been selected to represent New Zealand after making the national team that will compete at the World Masters Hockey World Cup in Holland at the end of July.

Congratulations to both Noah and Michelle on these outstanding achievements.
